Matthew: Chapter 16

16:1 THen came the Pharises and Saduces/ & dyd tempte him/ desyringe him to shewe them some signe from heuen. The Pharises also wt the Saduces, came and tempted him & desyred him that he wolde shewe them a sygne from heuen. 16:2 He answered and sayde vnto them. At euen ye saye/ we shall haue fayre wedder/ and that because the skye is reed: He answered and sayde vnto them: whan it begynneth to drawe toward euen, ye saye, it wylbe fayre wether, for the skye is reed? He answered and sayde vnto them. At euen ye saye/ we shall haue fayre wedder/ and that because the skye is reed: But he answered and sayd vnto them, At euen ye say, Fayre wether: for the skye is red.
16:3 and in the morninge ye saye/ to daye shalbe foule wedder and that because the skye is cloudy and reed. O ye ypocrites/ ye can discerne the fassion of the skye: and can ye not discerne the signes of the tymes? And in the mornynge: It wylbe foule wether to daye, for the skye is glowmyng reed. O ye ypocrites, ye can discerne the outward appearaunce of the skye: but can ye not discerne the sygnes of the tymes? and in the morninge ye saye/ to daye shalbe foule wedder and that because the skye is cloudy and reed. O ye ypocrites/ ye can discerne the fassion of the skye: and can ye not discerne the signes of the tymes? And in the mornyng ye say, To day shal be a tempeste, because the skye is red and cloudy. O ye hypocrites, ye can discerne the fashion of the skye, and can ye not discerne the signes of the tymes?
16:4 The frowarde nacion and aduoutrous seketh a signe/ & there shall no nother signe be geuē vnto them but the signe of the Prophet Ionas. So lefte he them and departed. The frowarde & aduoutrous nacyon requyreth a sygne, and there shall no sygne be geuen vnto it, but the sygne of the Prophet Ionas. And he lefte them, and departed. 16:5 And when his disciples were come to the other syde of the water/ they had forgotten to take breed with them. 16:6 Then Iesus sayd vnto them: Take hede and beware of the leuen of the Pharises & of the Saduces. Then Iesus sayde vnto them. Take hede and beware of the leuen of the Pharises & of the Saduces. 16:7 And they thought in thē selues sayinge: because we haue brought no breed with vs. And they thought in them selues saying: we haue taken no breed wt vs. And they thought in thē selues sayinge: because we haue brought no breed with vs. And they reasoned with them seines, saying. It is because we haue broght no breade with vs.
16:8 When Iesus vnderstode that/ he sayd vnto them. O ye of lytell faith/ why are youre mindes cumbred because ye haue brought no breed? Which whan Iesus vnderstode, he sayd vnto them: O ye of lytell faith, why take ye thought within your selues, because ye haue brought no breed? When Iesus vnderstode that/ he sayd vnto them. 16:9 Do ye not yet perceaue/ nether remember those .v. loues when there were v. M. men/ & how many baskettes toke ye vp? 16:10 Nether the .vij. loues when there were .v. M. and how many baskettes toke ye vp? Nether the .vii. loues when there were .iiii.M. men: & how many baskettes toke ye vp? Nether the .vij. loues when there were .v. M. and how many baskettes toke ye vp? Nether the seuen loues when there weer fyue thousand men, and how many baskettes toke ye vp?
16:11 Why perceaue ye not then/ that I spake not vnto you of breed/ when I sayde/ beware of the leuē of the Pharises and of the Saduces? how happeneth it that ye do not vnderstande, that I spake it not vnto you concernyng breed, that ye shulde beware of the leuen of the Pharises, & of the Saduces? 16:12 Then vnderstode they/ how that he bad not them beware of the leuē of breed: but of the doctrine of the Pharises/ and of the Saduces. 16:13 When Iesus came into the costes of the cite which is called Cesarea Philippi/ he axed his disciples sayinge: whom do men saye that I the sonne of man am? 16:14 They sayde/ some saye that thou arte Iohn Baptist/ some Helyas/ some Ieremias/ or one of the Prophetes. They sayde: some saye that thou art Iohn Baptist, some Helyas, some Ieremias, or one of the nombre of the prophetes. 16:16 Simon Peter answered & sayde: Thou arte Christ the sonne of the lyuinge God. Simon Peter answered & sayde: Thou art Christ the sone of the lyuynge God. 16:17 And Iesus answered & sayde to him: happy arte thou Simon the sonne of Ionas/ for flesshe and bloud hath not opened vnto the that/ but my father which is in heuen. And Iesus answered, & sayde vnto hym: happy art thou Simon the sonne of Ionas, for fleshe & bloud hath not opened that vnto the but my father which is in heuen. And Iesus answered & sayde to him: happy arte thou Simon the sonne of Ionas/ for flesshe and bloud hath not opened vnto the that/ but my father which is in heuen. And Iesus answered, and sayd to him, happy art thou Simon the sonne of Ionas, for flesh & blond hath not opened vnto thee that, but my father which is in heauen.
16:18 And I saye also vnto the/ that thou arte Peter: and apon this rocke I will bylde my congregacion. And the gates of hell shall not preuayle ageynst it. And I saye also vnto the that thou art Peter: & vpon this rocke I wil bylde my congregacion. And the gates of hell shal not preuayle agaynst it. And I saye also vnto the/ that thou arte Peter: and apon this rocke I will bylde my congregacion. And the gates of hell shall not preuayle ageynst it. And I say also vnto thee, that thou art Peter, and vpon this rocke I wil builde my congregation. And the gates of hel shal not ouercome it.
16:19 And I wil geue vnto the the keyes of the kyngdō of heuen: & what soeuer thou byndest vpon erth/ shall be bounde in heuen: and what soeuer thou lowsest on erthe/ shalbe lowsed in heuen. And I wil geue vnto the, the keyes of the kyngdom of heuen: And whatsoeuer thou byndest in erth, shall be bounde in heuen: & whatsoeuer thou loosest in erth, shalbe lowsed in heuen. And I wil geue vnto the the keyes of the kyngdō of heuen: & what soeuer thou byndest vpon erth/ shall be bounde in heuen: and what soeuer thou lowsest on erthe/ shalbe lowsed in heuen. And I wil geue vnto thee, the keyes of the kyngdome of heauen: & what soeuer thon shalt bynde vpon earth, shalbe bound in heauen: and what soeuer thou shalt lowse on earth, shalbe lowsed in heauen.
16:20 Then he charged his disciples that they shulde tell no man/ that he was Iesus Christ. Then charged he hys disciples, that they shulde tell no man, that he was Iesus Chris Then he charged his disciples that they shulde tell no man/ that he was Iesus Christ. Then he sharpelye charged his disciples, that they shuld tel no man that he was Iesus the Christ.
16:21 From that tyme forth Iesus began to shewe vnto his disciples/ how that he must go vnto Ierusalem/ and suffer many thinges of the elders/ and of the hye Prestes/ & of the Scribes/ & must be kylled/ & ryse agayne the thyrde daye. From that tyme forth beganne Iesus to shewe vnto his disciples, how that he must go vnto Ierusalem, & suffer many thinges of the elders, & hye Prestes, & Scribes, & must be kylled, and be raysed agayne the thyrde daye. 16:22 But Peter toke him a syde/ and began to rebuke him sayinge: master fauer thy selfe/ this shall not come vnto the. And when Peter had taken him asyde, he began to rebuke him, saying: master, fauer thy selfe, this shal not happen vnto the: But Peter toke him a syde/ and began to rebuke him sayinge: master fauer thy selfe/ this shall not come vnto the. But Peter toke hym asyde, and began to rebuke him, saying, Master looke to thy self, this shal not be vnto thee.
16:23 Then tourned he aboute/ and sayde vnto Peter: come after me Satan/ thou offendest me/ because thou sauourest not godly thinges/ but wordly thinges. but he turned him aboute, and sayde vnto Peter: go after me Satan, thou hyndrest me: for thou sauourest not the thinges that be of God, but those that be of men. Then tourned he aboute/ and sayde vnto Peter: come after me Satan/ thou offendest me/ because thou sauourest not godly thinges/ but wordly thinges. Then turned he about, and sayd vnto Peter, Away from me Satan: thou offendest me: because thou sauourest not the thynges that are of God, but the thynges that are of men.
16:24 Iesus then sayde to his disciples. If eny man will folowe me/ leet him forsake him selfe/ & take vp his crosse and folowe me. Then sayde Iesus vnto his disciples: If eny man wil folowe me, let him forsake him selfe & take vp his crosse, & folowe me Iesus then sayde to his disciples. If eny man will folowe me/ leet him forsake him selfe/ & take vp his crosse and folowe me. Iesus then sayd to his disciples, If any man wyl folow me, let him forsake hym self, and take vp his crosse, and folowe me.
16:25 For who soeuer will saue his lyfe/ shall loose it. And who soeuer shall loose his lyfe for my sake/ shall fynde it. For whoso wil saue his lyfe, shall loose it. Agayne, whoso doth lose his life for my sake, shall fynde it. For who soeuer will saue his lyfe/ shall loose it. And who soeuer shall loose his lyfe for my sake/ shall fynde it. For whosoeuer wil saue his lyfe, shal lose it. And whosoeuer shal lose his lyfe for my sake, shal fynde it.
16:26 What shall it proffet a man/ though he shulde wynne all the whoole worlde: yf he loose his awne soul? Or els what shall a man geue to redeme his soule agayne with all? For what doth it proffet a man, yf he wynne all the whole worlde: & lose hys awne soule? Or what shal a man geue to redeme his soule agayne with all? 16:27 For the sonne of man shall come in the glory of his father/ with his angels: & then shall he rewarde euery man accordinge to his dedes. 16:28 Verely I saye vnto you/ some ther be a monge them that here stonde/ which shall not taste of deeth/ tyll they shall haue sene the sonne of man come in his kyngdome. Verely I saye vnto you, ther be stondinge here, which shall not tast of deeth, tyll they se the sonne of man come in hys kyngdome. Verely I saye vnto you/ some ther be a monge them that here stonde/ which shall not taste of deeth/ tyll they shall haue sene the sonne of man come in his kyngdome. Verely I say vntp you some there be standing here, which shal not tast of death, tyl they shal see the Sonne of man come in his kyngdome.
