23:1 THen spake Iesus to the people/ and to hys disciples/ THen spake Iesus to the people/ & to his disciples THen spake Iesus to the people/ and to his disciples sayinge: THen spake Iesus vnto ye people and to his disciples,
23:2 saynge: The scrybs and the pharises sitt ī moses seate/ sayinge. The Scribes & the Pharises sit in Moses seate. The Scribes & the Pharises sit in Moses seate. and sayde: The scrybes & Pharises are set downe vpon Moses seate.
23:3 whatsoever they byd you observe/ that observe ād do: but after their workſ do not: for they saye/ and do not/ All therfore what soever they byd you observe/ that observe and do: but after their workes do not: All therfore what soeuer they byd you obserue/ that obserue & do: but after their workes do not: for they saye/ & do not. Therfore what soeuer they bid you obserue, that obserue and do, but after their workes shal ye not do,
23:4 Ye and they bynde hevy burthens ād greveous to be borne/ and ley thē on mēnes shulders: but they thē sylfe wyl not move them with one fynger. For they saye/ & do not. Ye & they bynde hevy burthēs & grevous to be borne/ & ley thē on mēnes shulders: but they them sylfes will not heave at them with one of their fyngers. Ye & they bynde heuy burthēs & greuous to be borne/ & ley thē on mēnes shulders: but they them selfes will not heaue at them with one of their fyngers. for they saye & do not. For they bynde heuy and intollerable burthens, and laye them vpon mens shulders: But they them selues wil not heaue at them with one of their fyngers.
23:5 All there workſ they do/ for to be sene of men. They sett abroade there philateris/ ād make large borders on there garmenttſ/ All their workes they do/ for to be sene of mē. They set abroade their philateries/ and make large borders on there garmētes/ All their workes they do/ for to be sene of mē. 23:6 ād love to sytt vppermooste at feastſ/ and to have the chefe seatſ in the synagoggſ/ & love to sit vppermooste at feastes/ and to have the chefe seates in the synagoges/ & loue to sit vppermoste at feastes and to haue the chefe seates in the synagoges/ and loue to syt vppermost at the table, and to haue the chefe seates in the synagoges,
23:7 and gretyngſ in the marketſ ād to be called of men Rabi. and gretinges in the marketes/ and to be called of men Rabi. and gretinges in the marketes/ and to be called of men Rabbi. and loue to be saluted in the market, and to be called of mē Rabbi.
23:8 But ye shall nott suffre youre selves to be called rabi/ for one ys youre master/ that is to wytt Christ. ād all ye are brethrē. But ye shall not suffre youre selves to be called Rabi. For one is youre master/ that is to wyt Christ/ & all ye are brethrē. But ye shall not suffre youre selues to be called Rabbi. For one is youre master/ that is to wyt Christ/ & all ye are brethrē. But ye shal not suffre youre selues to be called Rabbi, for one is youre master, euen Christ, and all ye are brethren.
23:9 And call ye no man youre father ō the erth/ for one is youre father/ and he is in heven. And call no man youre father vpon the erth/ for there is but one youre father/ & he is in heven. And call no man youre father vpon the erth/ for there is but one youre father/ & he is in heauē. And call no man father vpon earth, for one is youre father, which is in heauē.
23:10 be ye not called masters/ for one ys youre master/ and he is Christ. Be not called masters/ for there is but one youre master/ and he is Christ. Be not called masters/ for there is but one youre master/ & he is Christ. And ye shal not suffre youre selues to be called masters, for one is youre master, namely, Christ.
23:11 He that is greateste amonge you/ shalbe youre servaunte. He that is greatest amōge you/ shalbe youre seruaunte. He that is greatest amonge you/ shalbe youre seruaūt. He that is greatest amōge you, shalbe youre seruaunt.
23:12 But whosoever exalteth hym silfe/ shalbe brought lowe. and he that submitteth him silfe/ shalbe exalted. But whosoever exalteth him silfe/ shalbe brought lowe. And he yt hūbleth him silfe/ shalbe exalted. But whosoeuer exalteth him selfe/ shalbe brought lowe. And he that humbleth him selfe/ shalbe exalted. For who so exalteth him self, shal be brought lowe: and he that humbleth himself, shalbe exalted.
23:13 Wo be vnto you scribs and pharises dissemblers/ for ye sheet vp the kyngdom of heven before men: ye youre selves goo nott in/ nether suffre ye them that come to enter in. Wo be vnto you Scribes & Pharises/ ypocrites/ for ye shutte vp the kyngdome of hevē before men: ye youre selves goo not in/ nether suffre ye them that come/ to enter in. Wo be vnto you Scribes & Pharises/ ypocrites/ for ye shutte vp the kingdome of heauē before men: ye youre selues goo not in/ nether suffre ye them that come to enter in. Wo vnto you Scrybes and Pharises, ye ypocrytes, that shut vp the kyngdome of heauen before men: Ye come not in youre selues, nether suffre ye them to enter, that wolde be in.
23:14 Wo be vnto you scribes and pharises/ for ye devoure widdowes houses/ ād that vnder a coloure of praying longe prayers/ wherfore ye shall receave greater damnacion. Wo be vnto you Scribes & Pharises ypocrites: ye devoure widdowes houses/ & that vnder a coloure of praying longe prayers: wherfore ye shall receave greater damnacion. Wo be vnto you Scribes & Pharises/ ypocrites: ye deuoure widdowes houses/ & that vnder a coloure of prayinge longe prayers: wherfore ye shall receaue greater damnaciō. Wo vnto you Scrybes and Pharises, ye ypocrytes, that deuoure wyddowes houses, and that vnder the culoure of prayenge longe prayers, therfore shal ye receaue ye greater damnaciou.
23:15 Wo be vnto you scribes and pharises ypocrites/ for ye compasse see and londe/ to brynge one in to youre belefe: ād when ye have brought him ye make hym two folde more the chylde off hell/ then ye youre selves are. Wo be vnto you Scribes & Pharises ypocrites/ which compasse see & londe/ to bringe one in to youre belefe: & when he ys brought/ ye make him two folde more the chylde of hell/ then ye youre selves are. Wo be vnto you Scribes & Pharises ypocrites/ which compasse see & londe/ to bringe one into youre belefe: & when he is brought/ ye make him two folde moare the chylde of hell/ then ye youre selues are. Wo vnto you Scrybes and Pharises, ye ypocrytes, which compasse see and lōde to make one Proselyte: and whan he is become one, ye make of him a childe of hell, two folde more then ye youre selues are.
23:16 Wo be vnto you blynd gides/ for ye saye: whosoever sweare by the temple/ yt ys nothīge: but whosoever sweare by the golde of the tēple/ he is detter. Wo be vnto you blynd gides/ which saye whosoever sweare by the tēple/ it is no thinge: but whosoever sweare by the golde of the temple/ he offendeth. Wo be vnto you blinde gydes/ which saye whosoeuer sweare by ye tēple/ it is nothinge: but whosoeuer sweareth by the golde of the temple/ he offendeth. Wo vnto you blyndegydes, which saye: Who so euer sweareth by the temple, that is nothinge: but who so euer sweareth by the golde of the temple, he is giltie.
23:17 ye foles ād blīde? whether is greater/ the golde/ or the tēple that sanctifyeth the golde. Ye foles & blinde? whether is greater/ the golde/ or the tēple that sanctifieth ye golde. Ye foles & blinde: whether is greater/ the gold or the tēple that sanctifieth the gold? Ye fooles and blynde, whether is greater? the golde, or the tēple that sanctifieth the golde?
23:18 ād whosoever sweareth by the aulter it is nothīge: but whosoever sweareth by the offerīge that lyeth ō the aultre ys detter. And whosoever sweareth by the aulter it is nothinge: but whosoever sweareth by ye offeringe yt lyeth on ye aultre/ offendeth. And whosoeuer sweareth by the aulter/ it is nothinge: but whosoeuer sweareth by the offeringe that lyeth on the aultre/ offendeth. And who so euer sweareth by the altare, that is nothinge: but who so euer sweareth by the offeringe that is vpō it, he is giltye.
23:19 ye foles ād blīde: whether is greater the offerīge/ or the aultre whych sanctifyeth the offerīge? Ye foles & blinde: whether is greater ye offeringe/ or ye aultre which sanctifieth ye offeringe? Ye foles and blinde: whether is greater the offeringe/ or the aultre which sanctifieth the offeringe? Ye fooles and blynde, whether is greater? the offeringe, or the altare that sanctifieth the offerynge?
23:20 whosoever therfore sweareth be the aultre/ sweareth bi it/ ād by all that there ō is. Whosoever therfore sweareth by ye aultre/ sweareth by it/ & by all yt there on is. Whosoeuer therfore sweareth by the aultre/ sweareth by it/ and by all that there on is. Therfore who so sweareth by the altare, sweareth by the same, and by all that is theron:
23:21 And whosoever sweareth by the tēple sweareth by it/ ā by hym that dwelleth there in. And whosoever sweareth by the tēple/ sweareth by it/ & by hym yt dwelleth therin. And whosoeuer sweareth by the temple/ sweareth by it & by him that dwelleth therin. and who so sweareth by the temple, sweareth by the same, and by him that dwelleth therin.
23:22 And he that sweareth by hevē/ sweareth by the seate of god/ and by hym that sytteth there on. And he that sweareth by hevē/ swereth by the seate of God & by hym that sytteth ther on. And he that sweareth by heauen/ swereth by the seate of God & by him that sitteth theron. And who so sweareth by heauen, sweareth by the seate of God, and by him that sytteth theron.
23:23 Wo be to you scrybſ ād pharises desemblers/ for ye tythe mynt/ annys/ and cōmen/ ād leave the waygthtyer mattres of the lawe ō done: iudgement/ mercy/ and fayth: these ought ye to have done/ and not to have lefte the othre ondone. Wo be to you Scribes & Pharises ypocrites/ which tythe mynt annyse & cōmen/ & leave the waygthtyer mattres of ye lawe vndone: iudgemēt/ mercy/ & fayth. These ought ye to have done/ & not to have left the othre vndone. Wo be to you Scribes & Pharises ypocrites/ which tyth mynt/ anyse/ & cōmen/ & leaue the wayghtyer matters of the lawe vndone. iudgemēt/ mercy/ & fayth. These ought ye to haue done/ & not to haue left the other vndone. Wo vnto you scrybes and Pharises, ye ypocrytes, which tythe Mynt, Anyse and Commyn, and leaue the waightier matters of the lawe behynde: namely, iudgment, mercy, and fayth. These ought to haue bene done, and not to leaue the other behynde.
23:24 Ye blinde gydes/ which strayne out a gnat/ and swalowe a cammyll. Ye blinde gydes which strayne out a gnat and swalowe a cammyll. Ye blinde gydes which strayne out a gnat and swalowe a cammyll. O ye blynde gydes, which strayne out a gnat, but swalowe vp a Camell.
23:25 Wo be to you scrybſ/ ād pharises ypocritſ/ for ye make clene the vtter side off the cuppe/ and off the platter: but with in they are full of brybery and excesse. Wo be to you scribes & pharises ypocrites/ which make clene ye vtter syde of the cuppe/ & of the platter: but within they are full of brybery & excesse. Wo be to you Scribes & Pharises ypocrytes/ which make clene the vtter side of the cuppe/ & of the platter: but within they are full of brybery & excesse. Wo vnto you scrybes and Pharises, ye Ypocrytes, which make cleane the vttersyde of the cuppe and platter, but within are ye full of robbery and excesse.
23:26 Thou blynde pharise/ clense fyrst/ that which is with in the cuppe and the platter/ that the outsyde maye also be clene. Thou blinde Pharise/ clense fyrst/ the out syde of the cup and platter/ that the ynneside of them maye be clene also. Thou blinde Pharise/ clense fyrst the ynnesyde of the cup and platter/ that the outeside of them maye be clene also. Thou blynde Pharise, clense first the in syde of the cuppe and platter, that the out syde maye be cleane also.
23:27 Wo be to you scrybſ/ and pharises ypocritſ/ for ye are lyke vnto paynted tombes which appere beautyfull outwardſ: but are with ī full off deed mēs bones ād of all fylthynes. Wo be to you Scribſ & Pharises ypocritſ/ for ye are lyke vnto paynted tombes which appere beautyfull outwarde: but are wt in full of deed bones & of all fylthynes. Wo be to you Scribes & Pharises ypocrites/ for ye are lyke vnto paynted tōbes which appere beautifull outwarde: but are within full of deed bones and of all fylthynes. Wo vnto you scrybes and Pharises, ye Ypocrites, which be like vnto paynted Sepulcres, that appeare beutyfull outwarde, but within they are full of deed mens bones and all fylthines.
23:28 So are ye/ for outwardſ ye appere rightous vnto mē/ whē with in ye are full of dissimulacion ād iniquite. So are ye/ for outwarde ye appere righteous vnto mē/ when within/ ye are full of ypocrisie and iniquite. So are ye/ for outwarde ye appere righteous vnto men/ when within/ ye are full of ypocrysie and iniquyte. Euen so are ye also: Outwarde ye appeare righteous vnto men, but within ye are full of ypocrisye and iniquyte.
23:29 Wo be vnto you scrybſ and pharises ypocritſ/ ffor ye bilde the tombes off the prophettſ/ and garnisshe the sepulchres off iuste men/ Wo be vnto you Scribes & Pharises ypocrites: ye bylde the tombes of the Prophetes/ & garnisshe the sepulchres of the righteous/ Wo be vnto you Scribes & Pharises ypocrites: ye bylde the tōbes of the Prophetes/ & garnisshe the sepulchres of the ryghteous/ Wo vnto you scrybes and Pharises, ye ypocrites, which buylde the tombes of the prophetes, and garnysh the sepulcres of the righteous,
23:30 and saye: Yf we had bene in oure fathers tyme/ we wolde not have bene partners with them in the bloud of the prophetſ. & saye: Yf we had bene in the dayes of oure fathers/ we wolde not have bene parteners with them in the bloud of the Prophetes. & saye: yf we had bene in the dayes of oure fathers/ we wolde not haue bene parteners with them in the bloud of the Prophetes. and saye: Yf we had bene in oure fathers tyme, we wolde not haue bene partakers with them in the bloude of the prophetes.
23:31 So are ye witnesses vnto youre selves/ that ye are the childrē of thē/ which killed the prophetſ. So then ye be witnesses vnto youre selfes/ that ye are the chyldren of them which killed the prophetes. So then ye be witnesses vnto youre selues/ that ye are the chyldren of them wich killed the Prophetes. Therfore ye be wytnesses vnto youre selues, that ye are the children of them, which slew the prophetes.
23:32 Fulfyll ye lyke wyse the measure of youre fathers: Fulfill ye lyke wyse the measure of youre fathers. Fulfill ye lyke wyse the measure of youre fathers. Go to, fulfyll ye also the measure of youre fathers.
23:33 ye serpentſ ād generaciō of vipers/ howe shall ye scape the dāpnaciō of hell? Yee serpentes and generacion of vipers/ how shuld ye scape ye dāpnaciō of hell? Yee serpentes & generaciō of vipers/ how shuld ye scape the dampnaion of hell? O ye serpentes, O ye generacion of vypers, how wyl ye escape the damnacion of Hell?
23:34 Wherfore beholde y sēde vnto you/ prophetſ/ wyse mē/ and scrybſ/ ād off thē some shall ye kyll and crucifie/ and some shall ye scourge in your synagoggſ/ and persecute from cite to cite/ Wherfore/ beholde I sende vnto you/ prophetſ/ wyse men & scribes/ & of thē ye shall kyll & crucifie: & of thē ye shall scourge in youre synagoges/ & persecute from cyte to cyte/ Wherfore/ beholde I sende vnto you prophetes/ wyse men & scribes/ & of them ye shall kyll & crucifie: and of them ye shall scourge in youre synagoges/ & persecute frō cyte to cyte/ Therfore beholde, I sende vnto you prophetes and wysemen, and scrybes, and some of them shal ye kyll and crucifye, and some of them shal ye scourge in youre synagoges, and persecute them from cite to cite:
23:35 thatt all righteous bloud may fall on you/ which was sheed apon the erth/ from the bloud of rightous Abell/ vnto the bloud of Zacharias the sonne of Barachias/ whom ye slewe betwene the temple ād the altre: that vpon you maye come all the righteous bloude that was sheed vpon the erth/ frō the bloud of righteous Abell/ vnto ye bloud of zacharias the sonne of Barachias/ whō ye slewe betwene the tēple & ye altre. that vpon you maye come all the righteous bloude that was sheed vpon the erth/ frō the bloud of righteous Abel/ vnto that bloud of zacharias the sonne of Barachias/ whom ye slewe betwene the tēple & the altre. that vpon you maye come all the righteous bloude which hath bene shed vpon ye earth, from the bloude of righteous Abel, vnto ye bloude of Zachary ye sonne of Barachias, whom ye slew betwene the temple and the altare.
23:36 Verely y say vnto you/ all these thīgſ shall light apon this generaciō. Verely I say vnto you/ all these thinges shall light vpon this generacion. Verely I saye vnto you/ all these thinges shall lyght vpon this generacion. Verely I saye vnto you: All these thinges shal light vpō this generacion.
23:37 Hierusalem Hierusalem which kyllest prophetſ/ and stonest thē which are sent to the: howe oftē wolde I have gaddered thy children to gedder/ as the hēne gaddreth her chickēs vnð her wyngſ? but ye wolde not? Hierusalem/ Hierusalem which kyllest prophetes/ & stonest thē which are sent to the: how often wolde I have gadered thy chyldren to gether/ as the henne gadreth her chickēs vnder her wingſ/ but ye wolde not: Ierusalem/ Ierusalem which kyllest Prophetes/ & stonest thē which are sent to the: how often wolde I haue gadered thy chyldren to gether/ as the henne gadereth her chickēs vnder her winges/ but ye wolde not: O Ierusalem Ierusalem, thou that slayest the prophetes, and stonest them that are sent vnto the: How oft wolde I haue gathered thy children together, euen as the henne gathereth hir chekens vnder hir wynges, and ye wolde not?
23:38 beholde youre habitaciō shalbe lefte vnto you desolate. Beholde youre habitaciō shalbe lefte vnto you desolate. Beholde youre habitacion shalbe lefte vnto you desolate. Beholde, youre habitacion shalbe left vnto you desolate.
23:39 For y saye vnto you/ ye shall not se me hence forthe/ tyll that ye saye: blessed ys he that commeth in the name off the lorde. For I saye to you/ ye shall not se me hēce forthe/ tyll that ye saye: blessed is he that cōmeth in the name of ye Lorde. For I saye to you/ ye shall not se me hēce forthe/ tyll that ye saye: blessed is he that cōmeth in the name of the Lorde For I saye vnto you: Ye shal not se me hence forth, tyll ye saye: Blessed be he, that commeth in the name of the LORDE.
